Refugees and Asylum
Refugees are people who have fled their home countries because of a well-founded fear of persecution. These people are generally not able to return home. They have seen or experienced unsurmountable horrors and hardships. Unlike an immigrant who makes a conscious decision to leave their home country for a better life, a refugee is someone who is forced to leave.

Canadian refugee protection programs
The Canadian refugee system has two main parts:
  • The Refugee and Humanitarian Resettlement Program, for people who need protection from outside Canada and
  • The In-Canada Asylum Program for people making refugee protection claims from within Canada
You may be eligible to apply if you feel a threat of persecution or are at risk of torture, or cruel or unusual punishment in your home country.
