The study permit is a document that we issue to foreign citizens that authorizes them to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. To study in Canada, most foreign nationals require a study permit. Before you apply, make sure you have all of the necessary paperwork. You must apply before travelling to Canada.
Your study permit does not serve as a visa. It prevents you from entering Canada. A visiting visa or electronic travel permission may also be required (eTA). If your study permit is approved, you will receive it at the port of entry.
How long can you stay in Canada with a study permit?
A study permit is typically good for the duration of your study programme plus an additional 90 days. The 90-day period allows you to plan your departure from Canada or ask for an extension of your stay.
If you intend to complete your studies after your study visa expires:
If you do not complete your courses by the end of your permit period, you must seek to extend your stay as a student. If you don't, you'll have to discontinue your studies and leave Canada.
If you complete your studies before your study permit expires, you will be able to apply for a new one
If you complete your studies early, your permit will expire 90 days after you finish, regardless of the date listed on the study permit.
You have completed your studies on the date that your institution first tells you by completion letter, transcript, degree, or diploma.
You must provide documentation proving the date your school notifies you or the date you receive your degree, diploma, or certificate. If you don't have proof, IRCC will use the document's earliest issuance date. This date may be confirmed with your school.
